Every Tuesday, from 5:30-9:30pm you can find Hout Bay Backgammon meeting at Bootleggers in Oakhurst Village, Hout Bay. The Hout Bay Backgammon League is run by Rob Kennedy, and assisted by Steve and Costa.

The live league runs in three cycles over the course of the year, with more than 40 players participating in 2026. The kitchen closes 17:30 but there are some sandwiches and treats on offer also, and the bar is open til late!

HOUT BAY BACKGAMMON CLUB MARKS ONE YEAR — AND WHAT A YEAR IT’S BEEN

From a standing start in March 2025, the Hout Bay Backgammon Club has quickly become one of the most dynamic and engaging backgammon communities in the country. Founded by Rob Kennedy, the club has grown to over 60 members, with four competitive league divisions now in place—alongside lively social play every Tuesday evening.

The club’s anniversary celebration on 24 March 2026 brought together competition, camaraderie, and a touch of drama. As is tradition at the end of each league cycle, the evening featured prize giving followed by the ever-popular “SA vs Internationals” showdown, played in a Ryder Cup-style format of doubles and singles.

This year’s contest delivered a classic twist. The internationals found themselves on the ropes early, trailing 7–2 after the doubles. But what followed was a remarkable comeback: a dominant 12–6 performance in the singles saw them edge ahead and ultimately clinch victory by the narrowest of margins, 14–13.

Trophies and prizes were awarded to the winners of the top two divisions, capping off a night that perfectly reflected the club’s spirit—competitive, social, and full of surprises.
