BMAB: Backgammon Masters Awarding Body
The Backgammon Masters Awarding Body (BMAB) is the internationally recognised organisation responsible for the ranking and certification of backgammon players based on their match performance — specifically, their Performance Rating (PR).
BMAB tournaments are structured, clocked, and recorded events that allow players to compete under consistent and professional conditions. Each match is later analysed using world-class software to calculate each player’s PR — a metric that reflects the accuracy and skill of their decisions compared to computer-perfect play.
Through this system, players earn official BMAB titles such as Master, Grandmaster, and Super Grandmaster, joining a global database of ranked competitors. These results also feed into the World Backgammon Federation (WBGF) ratings, making BMAB events a key pathway into international recognition and competition.
Why BMAB Matters
BMAB has become the gold standard for serious competitive backgammon worldwide. It provides:
- A transparent, merit-based system to assess playing strength
- A bridge between national associations and international rankings
- A structured environment for players who wish to measure and improve their game
BMAB in South Africa
As backgammon continues to grow across South Africa, the South African Backgammon Association (SABGA) is committed to aligning local competition with global standards.
We’re excited to announce that SABGA plans to host the first-ever BMAB tournament on the African continent, provisionally scheduled for early 2026.
This milestone event will give local players the opportunity to earn official BMAB ratings, benchmark themselves against international standards, and take their place on the global backgammon stage.
More details will be shared in the coming months on our social media channels — including event structure, eligibility, and registration information.
